why are black holes so dense

Black holes are made up of a lot of matter (things like stars, planets, and gas) squeezed into a really small area. When this stuff is all crammed together, it takes up very little space, making the black hole very dense. It's like squeezing a lot of balloons into a small box - they take up very little room!
