ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Industrial & organizational psychology

Industrial and organizational psychology, or I/O psychology for short, is all about helping people work better together in a job or business setting. It's like teaching people to be better at their job and happier at the same time!

Imagine you're playing a game with your friends. When everyone knows the rules and works together, the game is more fun and you all win! But if someone doesn't understand the rules or doesn't work well with others, the game is less enjoyable and you might lose.

In a job or business setting, industrial and organizational psychologists help people understand the rules and how to work together better to make everyone happier and more successful.

Here are a few ways they do it:

- Hiring: They help companies find the best people to work for them by testing job applicants to see if they have the right skills.

- Training: Once someone starts a job, I/O psychologists help them to learn new skills and improve their performance.

- Work environment: They also help create a work environment that people will like to be in. Imagine a playground that has everything you need to play safely and have fun. I/O psychologists create this kind of "playground" for people who work together.

- Job satisfaction: Finally, they help people be happy at work by reducing stress and making sure people feel like their work is important.

All of these things help people work together better, which leads to happier, more successful companies.
