ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Janissary

Janissaries were special soldiers in the Ottoman Empire who were like super soldiers. They were chosen from a young age and taken away from their families to live with other boys in special schools. They were taught how to fight with swords and guns, and also how to read and write. These schools were called Janissary schools.

Once they were trained, the janissaries became very strong and brave. They were very important to the Ottoman Empire and its rulers, the sultans. They were like the sultan's guards and were sent to fight in wars to protect the empire.

Janissaries wore special uniforms with big hats called "sariks" and their own special symbol, the "tugra", was embroidered on their clothes. They were treated very well and given good food and shelter, but they were not allowed to marry or have families of their own.

Eventually, the janissaries became very powerful and started to do things their own way instead of following the sultan's orders. They became too strong and started to cause problems, so the sultan decided to get rid of them. They were disbanded in 1826.

In summary, janissaries were highly trained soldiers who lived in special schools and were treated well, but they also became too powerful and caused problems, so they were eventually disbanded.
