ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Personally identifiable information

Personally identifiable information (PII) is information about a person that could be used to identify them. Examples of PII include a person's name, address, Social Security Number, birth date, and phone number. Companies that process PII need to keep people's information safe and secure—for example, by using secure passwords and other security measures—to protect it from being seen or used by someone who should not have access to it.
