ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Regulatory agency

A regulatory agency is like a parent who makes rules for you to follow. It's a group of grown-ups who have been put in charge of making sure that different things follow the rules.

For example, let's say you and your friends are playing a game, but there are a lot of arguments about the rules. The parent (or in this case, the regulatory agency) would step in and make sure that everyone follows the same rules, so that the game is fair and fun for everyone.

Another job of a regulatory agency is to make sure that things are safe. Just like adults make sure you don't play with sharp objects or stick your finger in a socket, a regulatory agency makes sure that the things we use every day, like medicine and food, don't hurt us.

In summary, a regulatory agency makes rules to keep things fair and safe, just like your parents make rules to keep you safe and healthy.
