ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Shell corporation

Okay kiddo, let me explain shell corporations to you in a way you can understand.

Imagine you have a secret box where you keep your toys and you don’t want your brother or sister to find them. You can hide this box inside another box or bag so that no one can find it easily. This is kind of like what a shell corporation does.

A shell corporation is a company that has nothing inside it. Just like the outer box that hides the smaller toy box inside. The shell corporation is created by people who want to do something secret or shady, like hiding money or assets from the government or other people. These people use the shell corporation to look like a real company, but it’s really just an empty box.

People who do illegal things like drug dealers, terrorists, and very rich people who don’t want to pay taxes can use these shell corporations to hide their money and make it hard for people to find out what they are doing. This is why shell corporations are often associated with illegal activities, even though they are not always illegal.

So, when you hear the term "shell corporation," just think of a secret toy box that’s hiding something important or valuable inside. But, just like your mom and dad always tell you, it's not good to keep secrets and hide things from other people. In the same way, it's not good to use a shell corporation to hide things from the government, because it could be illegal and get you into big trouble.
