ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

microkernels

A microkernel is like a small mall. It's a very small space with only the most basic of tools and stores inside it. These tools and stores are there to help computers do their job. Inside the microkernel are things like memory and input/output managers, networking, and device drivers. These are all things that the computer needs to do its job, but it doesn't need too many of them. By keeping the microkernel small, the computer can use its resources more efficiently. That's why people use microkernels to make computers work better!
