ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ājīvika

Okay kiddo, do you know what religions are? They are like the things that people believe in to help them understand the world and how to live their lives.

One of these religions is called ājīvika. This religion started a long time ago in India. They believed that everything that happened in the world was determined by fate – which means that everything is already planned and we can't change it.

They also believed that there is no such thing as good or bad people – everyone is just living their own fate. They thought that we are all just like actors in a play, and we have no choice in what we do or how we act. This might sound a little strange, but it was very important to them.

The people who followed this religion were called ājīvikas. They used to wear special clothes and follow a lot of rules to make sure they were always doing what fate wanted them to do. They would only eat certain foods and do certain things at certain times of the day.

Like all religions, there were different beliefs and practices that people followed within the religion. But this is basically what the ājīvika religion was all about – believing in fate, and doing everything you can to follow it.
