The 1000 Genomes Project was a scientific project that started in 2008. It was designed to look closely at how different people around the world are different and the same. Scientists wanted to find out what kinds of genetic differences were found among different people and how they could use that information to help solve health problems. To do this, they looked at the DNA (or genetic code) of over 2,500 people from 26 different countries. Each person's DNA was compared to that of other people to see how similar or different it was. In the end, they had discovered almost every genetic variation that exists in humans today. By looking at the data they collected, scientists can now better understand how certain diseases develop, how medicines and treatments are best used, and even how our bodies react differently to different types of food.
