ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

1950s quiz show scandals

In the 1950s, people in the United States watched a lot of game shows on TV. Game shows let people show off their knowledge by answering questions. The people who answered the questions right got prizes and money. Some of the game shows were fixed (meaning not real) and the people on the show did not really win anything, but the producers made it look like they did. This was called cheating, and it was wrong. The people who were involved in cheating were punished and sent to jail, and the game shows were taken off the air.
