1980 Damascus Titan missile explosion

Okay, imagine a really big bomb that can destroy a whole city. This bomb is called a Titan missile. In 1980, there was one of these missiles being stored in a place called Damascus, which is a city in Arkansas, USA.

Now, the people who take care of these missiles were doing some work on one of them. They were trying to fix something called a "thrust-vector control" system. This system helps the missile move in the right direction when it's flying.

But something went wrong. There was a leak of a kind of fuel called hydrazine. If you've ever smelled ammonia, it's kind of like that. Hydrazine is very dangerous. It can hurt your skin and make you sick if you breathe it in.

The hydrazine made a big explosion. It was really loud and scary. But luckily, nobody was hurt. The explosion was big enough to make a big hole in the ground and damage some things nearby.

The people who take care of the missiles were able to fix the problem and make sure everything was safe. And that's the story of the 1980 Damascus Titan missile explosion.
