2003 ricin letters

Okay, imagine you really like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. But what if someone put something bad in the peanut butter? That's kind of what happened in 2003 with some letters that were sent to people in the mail.

These letters had a powder inside that was called ricin. It's a really, really bad thing that can hurt your body if you breathe it in or get it on your skin. The people who got these letters didn't know what was inside, and they got scared because they thought they might get sick.

Thankfully, not too many people got hurt from the ricin powder. But it was a big deal because the person who sent the letters was trying to hurt other people on purpose. That's not something that's okay, and the police worked really hard to figure out who did it so that they wouldn't be able to hurt anyone else.
