30 Frames a Second: The WTO in Seattle 2000

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a movie or a cartoon on TV? That's what we call a video, and it's made up of a lot of pictures that are shown really fast, so it looks like the characters are moving.

Now, imagine your mom or dad is taking a video of you while you're jumping on the bed. They can choose to record it in different ways. They can either take a lot of pictures really fast and make the video look like it's moving super smoothly, or they can take fewer pictures and make it look a bit choppy.

When we talk about 30 frames per second, that means the video is made up of 30 pictures for every second of the video. It's like if your mom or dad took 30 pictures of you jumping in just one second!

Now, the WTO (World Trade Organization) is a group of people who talk about how we can trade things like food and toys with other countries. In 2000, the WTO had a big meeting in Seattle where lots of people protested because they thought the WTO wasn't doing what's best for everyone. Some people were peaceful and some were angry and some were in between.

The video you're talking about is probably a recording of what happened during those protests. So, a video of 30 frames per second means that we see 30 pictures every second of the protesters, police, and everything happening in the city.

But remember, just like your mom or dad can choose to take fewer pictures or more pictures in their video, the person who made this video can also choose how many frames per second they want to use. They might choose 30 frames per second if they want the video to look really smooth and natural, or they might choose fewer frames per second if they want it to look more choppy.

Does that make sense?
