ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

5S (methodology)

5s is a fancy word that grown-ups use to talk about keeping things tidy and organized at work.

- First, we have to sort things out - this means we decide what things we need to keep and what things we don't need anymore. If we don't need them, we throw them away or give them to someone else who might need them.

- After sorting, we have to set things in order - this means we put things in their proper place. For example, we put all the pens and pencils in one drawer and all the papers in another.

- The third step is shine- this means we keep things clean and shiny. We use soap and water to make things look nice and new.

- The fourth step is standardize- this means making sure everyone is doing the same thing so we can all work together properly.

- Finally, we sustain it which means we keep doing everything we have learned and make it a habit so everything stays organized and clean.

5s helps us work better because if we are organized, we can find things easier, we don't waste time looking for things we need, and we can work more efficiently. When our work area is tidy, we can also avoid accidents and we feel better and happier at work.
