ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Abatis

Okay kiddo, imagine you are building a fort made of sticks and leaves. You want to make sure no enemies can sneak in and attack you. So, you build a special wall called an abatis.

An abatis is like a big pile of sticks and tree branches that are all jumbled up together in a line around the fort. The branches are sticking out every which way, like spikes. It might look like a big mess, but it's actually really effective at keeping bad guys out.

When someone tries to sneak up to your fort, they have to crawl over or through the abatis. But the sticks and branches are so tangled that it's really hard to get through without getting poked or stuck. It's like trying to crawl through a pile of pointy toothpicks!

So, the abatis is a great way to protect your fort from enemies. They might be able to climb over it eventually, but it would take a long time and give you plenty of warning to defend your fort!
