ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Abolition of time zones

Okay kiddo, do you know what time zones are? It's like your bedtime - it's different for you and your friend who lives in a different city, right? In the whole world, there are so many different cities and countries, that it can be hard to keep track of what time it is everywhere.

Some grown-ups have an idea that maybe we don't need time zones anymore. Instead, they suggest we could just use something called "Universal Coordinated Time," or UTC. This means that everywhere in the world would have the same time.

So, if it's 1 o'clock in the afternoon in London, England, it would also be 1 o'clock in the afternoon in New York City, USA, and in Tokyo, Japan. This might make it easier to plan things like video calls with friends and family who live far away, or to travel without getting jet lag because of the time difference.

However, some people might not like this idea because it might mess up certain things like someone's work schedule or the time the sun sets. So, it's just an idea right now and not everyone agrees that it's a good one. But it's always good to learn about new ideas, right?
