ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Absolute advantage

Dear little one,

Let me try to explain what absolute advantage means.

Imagine that you and your friend are playing a game of kicking a ball. You both have different skills when it comes to kicking the ball. Your friend is really good at it and can kick the ball farther than you while you can only kick the ball a short distance.

This means that your friend has an absolute advantage in kicking the ball because they can do it better and more efficiently than you can. They can also kick the ball faster and with more accuracy.

Now, in the real world, countries have different abilities to produce goods and services. Some countries have more resources, better technologies, and more skilled workers than others. This means that some countries have an absolute advantage in producing certain goods or services than others.

For example, China may have an absolute advantage in producing electronic devices because they have access to more resources and a greater number of skilled workers who are proficient in technology than other countries. Similarly, Saudi Arabia may have an absolute advantage in producing oil since they have a large quantity of oil reserves that are easily accessible.

So, when it comes to trade between countries, those that have an absolute advantage in producing certain goods or services benefit from exporting them to other countries, while importing goods or services they don't have the same advantages in. This creates a situation where countries are able to specialize in producing and exporting goods that they have an absolute advantage in, and trade with other countries for goods and services where they do not have this advantage.

I hope this explanation helps you understand what absolute advantage means. Keep learning, kiddo!
