Accession Day tilt

Okay kiddo, so you know how sometimes people wear fancy clothes and hats to celebrate special occasions like weddings or parties? Well, a long, long time ago in England, there was a special day when a new king or queen would become the ruler of the country. This special day is called the accession day.

On this day, the new king or queen would have a party where they would eat delicious food, dance and have fun. And one of the things they would do at this party was something called the accession day tilt.

The accession day tilt was a kind of game where people (usually knights or other important men) would ride on horseback holding long, wooden sticks called lances. They would charge at each other and try to knock their opponent off his horse. It was a bit like playing a really big game of tag, but with horses and sticks!

Now, the important thing to remember is that this was just a game, and people didn't really want to hurt each other. The lances they used were made of wood, and they wore special clothes and helmets to protect themselves.

So that's what the accession day tilt was all about, kiddo! It was a fun game that people played to celebrate the new king or queen.
