Activated carbon

Activated carbon is a special material that looks like really small pieces of charcoal. It's very useful for taking out harmful chemicals from liquids because it has lots of tiny holes which can suck up the bad stuff. This is how a water filter works – by using activated carbon to get rid of the toxins in water.
