Bone char

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of bone char? It’s something made from bones, like the ones in your body!

Bone char is a special kind of charcoal that’s made by heating animal bones to a really high temperature. This turns the bones into a black, powdery substance that is used in a lot of different ways.

One of the most common ways that bone char is used is to refine sugar. Sugar that comes from sugar cane or sugar beets often has impurities in it, so it’s mixed with bone char to filter out those impurities. Then the bone char is removed, leaving behind pure, white sugar.

Bone char is also used to make things like animal feed, fertilizer, and even some cosmetics. It’s a versatile substance that can be used in many different ways.

But don’t worry, kiddo - even though bone char is made from animal bones, it’s not harmful to humans. In fact, it’s a really useful substance that helps us make lots of things we use every day!
