Aerogel is a type of solid material that is very light and made mostly of air. It's made when scientists use chemicals to replace most of the liquid in a special kind of silicon called silica. It's so light that a 1-inch cube of it (2.5 cm) can weigh less than one-tenth of an ounce (3 grams). It's so light and strong that it can support a 1,000 pound (450 kilogram) car! But that's not all. Aerogel also has some super protection powers: it can keep things warm when it's cold outside, keep things cool when it's hot outside, block out light and keep noise out, and even protect you from extreme temperature changes.
