ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fogbank

Imagine you're in a room and you can't see anything because there is a thick cloud all around you. That's what a fogbank looks like. A fogbank is a very thick cloud that sits on the ground, like a blanket of fog. It can happen when cold air meets warm air and the moisture in the warm air condenses to form tiny water droplets or ice crystals.

When you're inside a fogbank, it can be hard to see anything beyond a few feet, just like when you're inside a cloud. This is because the fogbank is made up of tiny water droplets that reflect and scatter light, making it difficult for us to see objects in the distance. Even though we can't see through it, we can still breathe and move around in a fogbank.

Fogbanks can happen in different places, like near lakes or rivers, on mountaintops, or even in big cities. They can be dangerous if you're driving, because the visibility is poor, so it's important to be extra careful if you're driving in foggy conditions.

Next time you see a thick, cloudy mist on the ground, you'll know it's a fogbank!
