ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Aerophagia

When you eat your food, it goes down into your stomach where it gets digested. But sometimes when you swallow, you might accidentally swallow air too. That air can also go down into your stomach and make you feel really full and bloated.

Well, aerophagia is when you swallow a lot of air on purpose, and it can happen when people do things like eat too fast, drink through straws, or chew gum. Some people might do it without even realizing it!

When you have aerophagia, that extra air in your stomach can make you feel really uncomfortable and even cause you to burp a lot. Luckily, it usually goes away on its own, but if it's happening a lot, you might want to talk to a doctor who can help you figure out why and what to do about it.
