Air mail is mail that is sent by airplane. In the United States, for many years there were special planes used only to deliver mail. People would put letters and packages into special postboxes or take them to their local post office and the post office would load them onto the airplane and fly them to the destination. When the plane arrived, the post office in the destination city would deliver the mail. Nowadays, airplanes are still used to carry mail but they carry many other things as well.
