ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Albanian sworn virgins

Okay, so in Albania a long, long time ago there were some rules that said that girls couldn't do certain things that boys could do. For example, they couldn't go to school, own land, or do jobs that were typically done by boys.

But there was a way around these rules - a girl could become a sworn virgin. Basically, she promised to be a virgin for her whole life and live like a boy instead. This meant she could do all the things that boys could do, like go to school, own land and do jobs.

So, a sworn virgin would dress like a boy, talk like a boy, and act like a boy. Sometimes they would even change their name to a boy's name. This meant they were treated like a boy, which gave them more opportunities and freedom in their life.

It's important to note that this tradition is not as common nowadays and has largely disappeared in modern times.
