Alcohol use disorder

Okay, so imagine that your body has a special factory which is responsible for cleaning up all the dirt and harmful stuff that you put inside it. This factory is called the liver.

When you drink alcohol, it goes into your stomach and then your bloodstream, and your liver has to work hard to take it out of there. But sometimes, people drink too much and too often, and their liver can't keep up with all the alcohol. This can start to harm their body and brain, and can cause what we call alcohol use disorder.

When somebody has alcohol use disorder, they might feel like they really need to drink all the time, even if it's hurting them. They might have trouble stopping once they start drinking, or feel like they need more and more alcohol to feel okay. They might also have other problems because of their drinking, like getting into trouble with their family or job, feeling sick, or getting into accidents.

Alcohol use disorder is a disease, and it can be really hard to manage on your own. But there are people who can help, like doctors or therapists, who can teach you how to take care of yourself and feel better.
