ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Disulfiram-like drug

Okay kiddo, do you know that some medicines can make you sick if you drink alcohol while you are taking them? These medicines are called "disulfiram-like drugs".

Let me explain it this way - you know that alcohol is a kind of drink that makes you feel funny and happy, right? But sometimes people take medicine to make them feel better when they are sick. And some of these medicines don't like alcohol very much.

When you take a disulfiram-like drug, it tells your body not to break down alcohol the way it normally does. Instead, the alcohol stays in your body longer and can make you very sick.

Have you ever had a tummy ache after eating too much candy or ice cream? Well, when you drink alcohol with a disulfiram-like drug, it can give you a really bad tummy ache, along with nausea, headaches, and even trouble breathing.

So, the bottom line is - if you are taking a medicine that your doctor says is a disulfiram-like drug, make sure you don't drink any alcohol at all. It's better to be safe than sorry!
