An algebraic equation is like a balance or weighing scales. It has a left side and a right side and both sides have to balance each other out. That means that whatever number or letter you put on one side of the equation, you have to also put that same number or letter on the other side. For example, if the equation says 4+x=8, then 'x' has to be 4 on the other side so 4+4=8.
