ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Algebraic fraction

An algebraic fraction is like a puzzle where you have to put different numbers and letters together to make a fraction. Instead of normal numbers, though, we use letters like x and y.

For example, 2/3 is a normal fraction. But an algebraic fraction could look like (3x + 2)/(2y - 5). This fraction has two parts: the top part (3x + 2) and the bottom part (2y - 5).

We can do different things with algebraic fractions, like adding or subtracting them. We need to make sure the bottom parts are the same before we can add or subtract the top parts. This is kind of like when we add or subtract normal fractions, where we need to find a common denominator.

We can also simplify algebraic fractions by canceling out the top and bottom parts if they have things in common. This is like when we simplify normal fractions by canceling out factors.

Algebraic fractions are really helpful in math because they allow us to solve different problems that involve variables like x and y. By understanding how to work with algebraic fractions, we can solve more complicated equations and problems.
