Apartheid-era South Africa and the Olympics

So, a long time ago in South Africa, some people thought that white people were better than people who had brown or black skin. This was called apartheid, which means "separateness". The government made laws to keep white people and people with brown or black skin apart. This was really unfair and made a lot of people angry.

One way that people around the world show how good they are at sports is by competing in the Olympics. But during apartheid, South Africa wasn't allowed to join the Olympics because of the unfair laws they had. This made a lot of people even angrier, because they thought everyone should have the chance to compete.

But then, in 1960, South Africa was allowed to join the Olympics again. But there was a catch. Only white people and people with brown skin who the government liked would be allowed to go. People with black skin weren't allowed to take part at all. This made even more people angry, because it was still really unfair.

Finally, in 1992, after a lot of protests and pressure from people around the world, South Africa was allowed to join the Olympics again without discrimination. Now, everyone in South Africa, no matter what their skin color is, can compete in the Olympics and show how good they are!
