ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Appanage

An appanage is like sharing candy with your brother or sister. Imagine that you have a big bag of candy, but you want to share it with your brother or sister. So you give them some of the candy, but not all of it. This is called an appanage.

In the past, there were kings and queens who ruled over countries. They had lots of children, but only one of them could be the king or queen. So they would give some of their other children a piece of land or money to rule over, but it wouldn't be as much as the main ruler's share. This is also called an appanage.

So, an appanage is when someone in power (like a king or queen) shares part of their power or land or money with someone else, but not all of it. It's like giving a little piece of something, but not everything.
