ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Approach chord

An approach chord is like a helper chord that gets us from one main chord to another. It's like walking from your house to grandma's house, but you have to cross a river in the middle. You need a bridge to help you get across the river, and that's what an approach chord does in music.

Let's say we want to go from the chord C to the chord G in a song. The approach chord we might use is the chord D. We play the chord C, then we play the chord D. The chord D has some similar notes to the chord C and some similar notes to the chord G, so it helps our ears get ready for the change to the chord G. Finally, we play the chord G and we've made it to our destination!

Approach chords can be used in lots of different ways to make music sound more interesting and keep our ears interested. Just like crossing a river with a bridge, approach chords help us get from one point to another safely and smoothly in music.
