ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Aquatic mammal

An aquatic mammal is a kind of animal that lives mostly in water, just like a fish, but it is not a fish! Instead, these animals are mammals, just like us humans.

Mammals have a similar body structure to us, with warm blood, hair, and they feed their babies milk from their bodies. But these aquatic mammals have adapted to living in water. They have webbed feet or fins, streamlined bodies, and can hold their breath for a really long time!

Some examples of aquatic mammals are dolphins, whales, and seals. Dolphins and whales are super fast swimmers that can dive really deep underwater. They also use a special way of communicating with each other using clicks and whistles. Seals are funny-looking animals that have flippers to swim with and are really good at balancing on icebergs.

Living in water is not easy, though! Aquatic mammals have to be careful of predators like sharks and orcas, and they also need to find enough food to survive. Some even have to migrate thousands of miles every year to find the right conditions to raise their babies.

Even though aquatic mammals live in water, they still need air to breathe. So don't forget, just like humans, these animals need oxygen to live, and they have evolved special techniques to make sure they can get the air they need!
