ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Arab Spring

The Arab Spring was like a big wave that happened in many countries located in the Middle East and North Africa where people protested and demanded changes in their governments.

Imagine you and your friends are playing together and one of your friends is being mean to everyone all the time, never sharing toys or games, and making the rules in a way that only benefits them. One day, you and your friends decide that you've had enough and you all agree to make a plan to talk to your friend and try to convince them to be nicer to everyone and share fairly.

This is what happened in the Arab Spring. People in these countries were not happy with their governments. They felt like their leaders were not doing a good job and were only thinking about themselves. They saw that their countries were not as good as other countries and wanted their leaders to make changes to improve their lives.

So people started gathering in the streets and shouting things like "We want freedom" and "We want democracy". They wanted the freedom to say what they wanted, to choose their leaders and to live in a fair society with more opportunities.

Many countries in the Arab world experienced these protests, and some leaders were forced to leave their positions as a result. Many people hoped that these protests would bring about lasting change for the better, but some countries faced difficulties and did not see the changes they wanted to see.

So, in a nutshell, the Arab Spring is a time when lots of people in the Middle East and North Africa stood up and asked for change, just like you and your friends did when you decided to talk to your mean friend.
