ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Arc lamp

An arc lamp is like a super-bright lightbulb that creates light by using a really strong electric current.

Imagine you have a really long, skinny pencil that's made out of metal. Now imagine you have two pieces of metal at either end of that pencil that you can use to connect it to a big battery.

When you connect the metal pencil to the battery using those metal pieces, really strong electricity starts flowing through the pencil. And if you look closely, you'll see a bright little spark jumping back and forth between the two pieces of metal at the ends of the pencil.

That spark is called an "arc," and an arc lamp works by creating a really big one between those metal pieces at either end of the pencil. When the electricity flows through the pencil and creates that big arc, it gives off a really bright light.

So arc lamps are like really strong, super-bright lightbulbs that use electricity to create an arc of light between two metal pieces.
