ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Assisted migration

Assisted migration is a fancy way of saying that we help plants and animals move from one place to another. Just like when we help our friends move to a new house, sometimes plants and animals need help too!

But why do they need help? Well, sometimes the place where they live gets too hot or too cold, or maybe there's not enough food or water. If they can't move to a better place on their own, that's where humans come in to help.

For example, let's say there's a kind of plant that lives in a really cold area but it's getting warmer and warmer because of climate change. That plant might not be able to survive in the new, warmer place by itself. So people might take some of those plants and move them to a new, cooler place where they can survive better.

But it's important to be careful when we do this! We need to make sure that the new place is a good fit for the plant or animal, and that we don't accidentally introduce them to a new place where they could become invasive and harm other plants or animals. It's a bit like playing matchmaker -- we want to help things find their perfect match!

So that's what assisted migration is all about: helping plants and animals move to a new home where they'll be happier and healthier.
