ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Assyrian homeland

So imagine you have a big family with many cousins, uncles and aunts. You all live together in one house but sometimes it gets too crowded and you need your own space. You might think it would be nice if your family could have their own house just for you guys, where everyone could have their own space and be happy.

That's is what the Assyrian people feel like. They used to live in an area called Assyria, which is now parts of Iraq, Syria and Turkey. But they feel like they need their own space where they can be safe and happy, just like you might want your own house.

So they want to create a new area, a homeland, just for themselves, where they can speak their own language, practice their own culture and be safe. They believe that they sacrificed a lot over time and that they deserve this.

The problem is, many countries control the land they want to call their new home, and those countries don't necessarily agree with giving it up. That is why the Assyrian people continue to fight for their own homeland.
