This started in the 1500s, when many people from Africa were taken across the Atlantic Ocean and sold as slaves. They were bought by different people from all over the world, and had to work for them for free. This happened for over 300 years, until Brazil made it illegal in 1888. Slavery was a terrible time for many people and it caused a lot of suffering and sadness.
