ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Atmospheric duct

So, imagine a tube made of air, like a straw but much bigger. This tube goes all the way from the ground to the sky. We call this tube the atmosphere.

Now, sometimes the air inside the tube is warmer or cooler in different places. When this happens, the air gets all mixed up and creates something called an atmospheric duct.

An atmospheric duct is kind of like a bendy straw. It makes the air zigzag and swirl around inside the tube.

This can cause some really cool things to happen. For example, if you're talking to someone far away, the sound of your voice can get caught in the atmospheric duct and be carried really far. Or, if you use a radio, the signals can travel even farther!

But it's not just fun and games. Sometimes, atmospheric ducts can be dangerous. Pilots, for example, have to be really careful when flying in an atmospheric duct. It can make their planes go wonky!

So, in summary, an atmospheric duct is like a bendy straw in the sky that can carry sounds and signals really far but can also be dangerous for pilots.
