ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Auditory brainstem response

So, you know how we use our ears to hear things, right? But do you know how our brains help us hear? Well, our brains have a special way of listening, too. It’s called the auditory brainstem response or ABR for short.

Let me explain it like this: Imagine you’re at a party and there are lots of people talking at once. If someone talks to you, it might be hard to hear them because of all the other noise. But your brain can focus on the important sounds and separate them from the noise. It’s kind of like a superhero power!

When we hear a sound, it first enters our ears and travels to our brainstem. The brainstem is a part of our brain situated right below where our brain connects with our spinal cord. Our brainstem acts like a gatekeeper, checking if the sound is important or not. If the sound is important, our brainstem sends it to our brain for us to recognize, like a bird chirping outside our window or someone saying our name.

So how does this help us with hearing tests or hearing problems? ABR is a test where electrodes or little stickers are placed on your head, around your ears. These stickers record how your brainstem is reacting to sounds. During the test, you just lie still and listen to sounds. Your brainstem’s response to these sounds is recorded and then a special doctor, called an audiologist, studies the results to see if your hearing is okay or if you might have a hearing problem.

So that’s what ABR is all about. It’s a special way that our brains listen and help us understand important sounds. By testing our ABR, we can check if our hearing is healthy and ensure that we can continue to enjoy all the wonderful sounds in the world around us!
