ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Australian pound

The Australian pound was the currency used in Australia before the country changed to the decimal system in 1966. It was kinda like the money that your parents use to buy you toys, sweets or ice-cream.

Just like how you get coins of different sizes and colors like 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, etc. the Australian pound had coins too! They were called pennies and some of them had cool animals on them like kangaroos or emus.

And just like how your parents have paper money, the Australian pound also had notes of different values like 1 pound, 5 pounds or 10 pounds. These notes were bigger than coins and had pictures of important people or landmarks on them.

But, in 1966, Australia decided to change their money system and started using dollars and cents, which is what we use today. So, now you can use coins and notes with cool designs like kangaroos, platypuses, or landmarks like Uluru or the Sydney Opera House. And, 1 Australian dollar is equal to 100 cents, which means it's easier to understand and count your money now!
