ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ayin

Ayin is a letter in the Hebrew alphabet that looks like a squiggly line with two little dots above it. In Hebrew, it makes a kind of guttural "ah" sound that's pronounced deep in the throat.

When you talk, air comes out of your mouth and makes sound. When you say the letter ayin, the air comes from your throat instead of your mouth. It's like you're swallowing the air and then pushing it out to make the sound.

Some words in Hebrew have the letter ayin in them, like "Israel" and "Jerusalem." It's an important letter in the Hebrew language and helps make it sound different from other languages.
