Badge of shame

A badge of shame is something that makes people know that you have done something wrong. It can be either a label or a physical item, like the letter A that Hester Prynne had to wear in the book The Scarlet Letter. It is like people are wearing a sign that says "I did something bad." It's a way of saying that you are embarrassed about your actions and that you know you did something wrong.
