ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Bail (Canada)

Imagine you have a toy that you really love, but you did something that made your mom or dad upset. They take the toy away from you and tell you that you can't have it back until you behave better.

Now imagine that the toy is a person, and the person did something that the police think is against the law. The police take the person away and put them in jail until they have to go to court to explain what happened.

Sometimes, the person who is in jail says that they promise to come back to court when they are supposed to, but they don't want to stay in jail until then. This is where bail comes in.

Bail is like a special promise that the person gives to the court. They say that they will come back to court when they are supposed to, and they will pay some money as a guarantee that they will do it. This money is meant to show the court that the person is serious about coming back and that they won't try to run away.

If the person keeps their promise and goes to court when they are supposed to, they get the money back. But if they don't come back to court, they might lose the money and have to go back to jail.

So bail is basically a way for the court to let someone out of jail while they wait for their court date, as long as they promise to come back and give some money as a guarantee.
