ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Baku pogrom

Imagine you are playing with your toys and suddenly some other kids come and take them away from you. You feel sad and angry, right? This is kind of what happened in Baku, which is a city in Azerbaijan, a country in Europe.

A long time ago, in the 1990s, Azerbaijan and a neighboring country called Armenia were fighting over a piece of land called Nagorno-Karabakh. The people in Nagorno-Karabakh mostly spoke Armenian but it was under the control of Azerbaijan.

One day, some bad people in Baku started to attack the Armenian people who were living there. They burned down homes, beat up people, and made them leave the city. This was called the Baku Pogrom. It was really mean and unfair because the Armenian people didn't do anything wrong, they were just living there peacefully.

Lots of people were hurt or killed during the Baku Pogrom and many had to leave their homes in fear for their lives. It was a really sad and scary time for the people affected by it.
