ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Balance shaft

Imagine you have a toy car that you like to push around, but sometimes it wobbles a lot and doesn't go straight. This is kind of like what happens in a car engine, where lots of parts are moving back and forth very quickly to make the car go, but sometimes they can make the engine shake and vibrate like crazy.

To help fix this shaking problem, cars sometimes have something called a balance shaft. This is sort of like an extra spinny thing that's attached to the engine and moves around in just the right way to counteract all the other moving parts and keep the engine from shaking too much.

Just like how you might add weight to one side of your toy car to make it go straighter, the balance shaft helps balance out the movements of the engine so that it runs more smoothly and efficiently. And just like how you have to be careful not to add too much weight and make your toy car go too far to one side, the balance shaft has to be designed and placed just right so that it doesn't cause any other problems in the engine.
