Baptists were a type of Christian church who believed that religion and government should be kept separate. This means that the government should not be allowed to have any control over religious beliefs or activities and it should not influence people’s beliefs or practices. This idea began in the 1500s when Baptist leaders spoke out against the way the Church and State were connected in countries across Europe. The Baptist belief in a separation of Church and State helped shape our laws today. This means that in America we are free to practice different religions without the government telling us what we should believe or how we should practice our faith.
