Base-promoted epoxide isomerization

Okay kiddo, let's say you have a toy car that can change shape when you add some special juice to it. This special juice is called base-promoted epoxide isomerization.

Now, imagine that the toy car is made up of a special molecule called an epoxide. When you add the base-promoted epoxide isomerization juice to it, the epoxide molecule changes its shape and becomes a different molecule called an alcohol.

But there's a catch! When the epoxide molecule changes its shape, it can sometimes become two different types of alcohol molecules - one that is called cis and one that is called trans. Think of it like a puzzle piece that can fit into two different spaces.

The base-promoted epoxide isomerization juice can help you control which type of alcohol molecule you want to make. If you add a lot of the juice, you'll get mostly the cis alcohol molecule. But if you add a little of the juice, you'll get mostly the trans alcohol molecule.

Scientists use this base-promoted epoxide isomerization process to make all sorts of different molecules for medicines, plastics, and other cool things.
