Baseball's Sad Lexicon

Okay kiddo, baseball's sad lexicon is a special name for a group of words used to describe a really sad moment in baseball history.

A long time ago, in the early 1900s, there was a baseball team called the Chicago Cubs. They were really good and had some amazing players like Frank Chance, Joe Tinker, and Johnny Evers. People called them the "Tinker to Evers to Chance" trio because they worked together so well on the field.

But one day, something really sad happened. The Cubs were playing against another team and they were losing. As a last ditch effort to win, the Cubs tried to make a double play. That's when the team gets two outs in one play.

But it didn't work out. One player made a mistake and missed catching the ball. That mistake cost the Cubs the game and the chance to go to the World Series.

People were really sad about it and they talked about it a lot. That's when some writers wrote a poem about it and used some special words to describe that sad moment. And those special words are now called baseball's sad lexicon.

So, even though it's a sad moment in baseball history, the sad lexicon is still used today to describe any time a player messes up an important play.
