ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Beatniks

Okay, so beatniks were a group of very cool people from a long time ago in the 1950s and 1960s. They were kind of like hippies but a little different. They liked to wear really interesting clothes like big sunglasses, berets, black turtlenecks, and sometimes they had long beards or mustaches. They liked to hang out in coffee shops and talk about really deep and important ideas like poetry, music, and art.

They were called "beatniks" because they were part of a movement called the "Beat Generation." This meant they were very into "beats," which were like rhythms in music and poetry. They thought art and culture were really important and wanted to be free to express themselves in their own unique ways.

Some famous beatnik people were writers like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, and musicians like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. They were a really interesting group of people who lived their lives in a way that was different from the norm. They wanted to explore what it meant to be creative and free thinkers, and they did it with style!
